Punks, Ravers, Mods and Teddy Boys. No, these aren't some hot new bands, but the names of a number of British youth subcultures(亚文化) from the last 70 years.
Youth Club, a UK not-for-profit organization, released a book earlier this year celebrating many different subcultures from throughout Britain s recent history.
"A catalyst(催化剂) for creativity on the worldwide stage, British youth culture movements from the Teddy Boys of the 1950s to the grime Scene of the 2000s continue to play a pioneering role in music, fashion and creativity across the globe," it wrote on its website.
These subcultures were traditionally a way for young people to show their personalities to others. Walking around London in the 1970s would have meant seeing dozens of young "punks" - people dressed in ripped denim(破洞牛仔裤), leather jackets, body piercings(穿孔) and with brightly-dyed hair—on the streets. And in the90s, “ravers” were young people who threw all-night parties in abandoned buildings or car parks.
So, what was the reason behind these subcultures?
"On both sides of the Atlantic, more and more young disappointed teenagers were looking for an escape from the boredom and constraints(约束)of society, "wrote lan Youngs, BBC entertainment reporter. "Unemployment, racial tensions and social upheaval (剧变)added fuel to their fires."
Youth subcultures have all but disappeared in the West. Some experts believe the reason for this is the instant and low-priced availability of music and clothing in the internet age.
"Fashion and music, they’re much cheaper and they’re much faster today, " Ruth Adams, a culture lecturer at Kings College London told The Guardian.
"When I was a teenager, you had to stick to one type of music or fashion, because it cost more money. Now, it' s all a bit more blurry(模糊不清的),” she said, believing that it's harder to figure out someone's personality or music tastes nowadays just by looking at them.
Despite this, Adams believes that today’s young people are still finding their own way to express themselves, but in a more modern way.
"It's certainly happening online," she said. "It's a lot easier to use personas(伪装) online just by showcasing certain types of mysterious knowledge."
24. According to the text, British youth subcultures____.
A. could be traced back to the 1970s
B. were started by Youth Club to promote creativity
C. were a way for youth to express their identities
D. had a greater impact on fashion than music
25. What contributed to the popularity of these youth subcultures?
a. Young people's desire for freedom and fun.
b. Young people's longing for fame and wealth.
c. The social pressure young people suffered.
d. The easy access to music and clothing.
A. a b
B. a c
C. b d
D. c d
26. Which of the following would Ruth Adams probably agree with?
A Music and fashion trends develop too fast for young people to follow today.
B. Young people today are less willing to express themselves as her peers did.
C. Young people today are less interested in music and fashion than her peers used to be.
D. The internet makes it harder to figure out the personalities of young people today.
27. What's the author' s attitude toward subcultures?
A. Objective
B. Negative
C. Doubtful
D. Supportive

It's a classroom; but instead of being told to sit quietly and listen, you are encouraged to stand up, jump around, imagine and act out it's a class full of laughter and applause(掌声), emotion and energy. Welcome to drama class, one of my favorite classes at high school.
In drama class we used to play a lot of“ drama games. We would improvise(即兴表演), mime(模仿) and above all use our imaginations.
My favorite game was called "Spotto". One person stood at the front of the class and performed a scene, completely out of their imagination. When one audience member yelled "Spotto!", the performer had to freeze. Then the person who had yelled Spotto had to get up and improvise a new scenario (剧情)based on the position the first performer froze in. This went on as more and more people were added to the scene.
Eventually the entire class would have joined the scene. Then the performers would start to leave in reverse(颠倒的)order. The first performer had to have a good memory to remember all the other scenes.
It was a lot of fun, and a good test of everyone's imagination to see what they would come up with.
Drama class at my school often involved a big performance at the end of the semester as well. We would work on a production throughout the semester and put on a show for our parents and the school community.
It was a great experience to perform on stage in front of a large audience. Drama class can help shy children to come out of their shells. It helped me become more confident and developed my public speaking skills. Drama class is also a great place to express yourself, and a way for children to use up some of their energy.
28. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the game "Spotto" as described in the article?
A "Spotto" is designed to help drama students lean from one another’s performance.
B. A performer has to think of a story completely unrelated to that of the performer before him or her.
C. Each performer in a "Spotto" game has to retell the story of the performer directly after him or her.
D. Every student gets the chance to make a contribution to the "Spotto" game.
29. The underlined word "freeze" in Paragraph 3 probably means_______.
A. stop
B. quit
C. change
D. wait
30. We can infer from the article that the author______.
A. Doesn't like to sit quietly in class
B. never performed well in the drama games
C. used to be quite a shy student
D. used to shine in performances
31. What is the article mainly about?
A. Unforgettable experiences on stage.
B. One of the author's favorite high school courses.
C. How to improve your drama skills.
D. A few drama games for fun.

Think of the empty cities in zombie(僵尸)movies. The streets, the shops and the schools still there just like they would be on a normal day, except there are no people to be seen. It is the emptiness that scares you.
Now a real-life "ghost city" is being built in the US. But fortunately, it has nothing to do with zombies - it is going to be a place to test the technology of the future
Called CITE - the Center for Innovation(创新), Testing and Evaluation(测评) - the city is the idea of technology company Pegasus Global Holdings. Covering an area of 15 square miles (39 square kilometers), it is the size of a small US city and sits in the middle of the New Mexico desert.
But why do we need an empty city that nobody will call home?
The reason is that we can't afford to test the latest technologies in the cities that we live in - they might not be ready and could cause problems and danger in our everyday lives.
"It will be a true laboratory without the problems and safety issues that come with people living there. Here you can break things and run into things, and get used to how they work, before taking them out into the market, Pegasus managing director Robert Brumley told technology magazine Wired.
In fact, without worrying about hurting people, anybody with a new idea can ask to test it in this city. Just think about the possibilities- driverless cars can move freely on the streets, homes with robots can be designed and energy sources like nuclear power can also be put to the test.
As good as the idea may seem, however, there are still doubts about CITE. "One of the most difficult things to do when developing these new technologies is to have them safely move around people, who can suddenly jump out in front of something," Reese Jones, a founder of Singularity University, US, told Fortune magazine.
Jones is worried that, even if a technology works perfectly well in CITE, introducing it to a real city will still be a whole different story because there will be people living in the city.
But no matter what, perhaps we should wait until CITE is finished in 2018. Maybe it will turn out to work just fine.
32. The empty city is being built_____.
A. so people can experience the technology of the future
B. to try driverless cars and robots in
C. to test new technology in
D. as a place full of the latest technology
33. Which of the following statements is TRUE about CITE?
A. It is located beside the New Mexico desert.
B. It was started by Singularity University.
C. Things in the city can easily be broken down and built again.
D. Anyone can ask to try out their new designs there.
34. According to Jones,_______.
A CITE offers great possibilities for future technology
B. new technologies will work perfectly well with the help of CITE
C. settings in CITE should be real in order to create the best results
D. testing results in CITE may not prove to work in a real city
5. What is the main purpose of this article?
A. To explain why CITE could be very helpful.
B. To show that CITE has a bright future.
C. To explain CITE and problems it may have.
D. To offer a good solution that will help to develop future technologies.
